Mohawk leads innovation in sustainable flooring with SmartStrand® carpet with DuPont™ Sorona® renewably sourced polymer. In a partnership with DuPont, this carpet exclusively offers fiber made with Bio-PDO™ (the key Sorona® ingredient), which is produced from corn sugar.

By utilizing this new ingredient, 37 percent of Sorona® is being made from renewable resources. This marks the first time that a luxuriously soft carpet offers durability and stain protection, while also making less of an environmental impact.

Why Is SmartStrand Carpet Environmentally Smart?

The Ultimate Test in Carpeting

The most extraordinary carpet is about to go up against the fiercest of beasts. Mohawk SmartStrand made with DuPont Sorona renewably sourced polymer has been installed in the enclosure of a rhinoceros at the Birmingham Zoo in Alabama. Beginning on Friday, Aug. 14, Mohawk and DuPont will broadcast live from the home of Ricko, a 12-year-old, 2,800-pound Black Rhinoceros.

We’re calling it the SmartStrand Rhino Challenge.

Until Aug. 28, Ricko the Rhino will live on SmartStrand and the whole world can watch every single moment from one of four ‘Rhino-Cams’ installed at the zoo. All of these live feeds will be available at SmartStrandChallenge.com.

Following Ricko’s time on the carpet, we will remove all 1,040 square feet and clean it using Mohawk FloorCare Essentials products. Video documentation will follow SmartStrand through and you can bet that the carpet will live up to this promise:
